A Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up Your First Automation with Zapier

Zapier connects thousands of apps so that an action in one triggers a task in another, without writing any code. This tutorial builds a simple automation to show how the pieces fit together.

The example automation saves email attachments from Gmail directly into a Google Drive folder. Start by creating a free Zapier account and clicking “Create Zap” from the dashboard.

Choose Gmail as the trigger app and select “New Attachment” as the trigger event. Zapier will ask you to connect your Gmail account and specify which label or folder to monitor for new messages.

For the action step, select Google Drive and choose “Upload File.” Connect your Google account, then map the attachment field from the trigger step into the upload action so Zapier knows exactly what file to move.

Before turning the Zap on, use the built-in test feature to run it against a real recent email. This confirms the file actually lands in the correct Drive folder before the automation runs unattended.

Once tested successfully, toggle the Zap to “On.” From this point forward, any qualifying email attachment gets saved automatically, removing a task that used to require manual downloading and uploading.

This same trigger-and-action pattern applies across nearly every automation in Zapier, so once one Zap is built, connecting other apps becomes much faster to figure out.
